It belongs to the Faculty of Historical Cultural Sciences. The department was founded as a self-governed institution in 1922 with a focus on social and economic structures to be explored in a comparative way, inter-relating various fields of society as well as spatial levels from local and national to global in a perspective of long-term change. It holds four full professors, 9 associate professors, 9 affiliated scholars and up to 10 junior, temporary, and guest researchers. The Department is the biggest department for Economic and Social History in the German speaking world.
